Letting the Story Happen

by Ian on March 11, 2008

Last night, I could’ve called a locksmith as soon as I discovered I left my keys and cellphone in my apartment.

Or called a friend to stay at their place until morning.

Or slept in my car instead of taking a cab to a dive bar.

Or ignored the angry women at the bar who mentioned having 2 bottles of champagne at their house.

But if I hadn’t left the bar with them at that exact moment, I wouldn’t have run into the Iranian lesbian sperm donor, convinced his mistrusting girlfriend I wasn’t a homeless serial rapist, or hooked up with their cute hairstylist friend.

And then I would have emailed Tucker Max and called him a liar and his stories “impossible.”

Adventure can happen at any time, as long as you let it. It’s easy to bicker with fate and prune a story before it even begins, but to me, it makes more sense to be agreeable and just let it happen. Next time, instead of limping in or going home, why don’t you escalate a mundane situation into an interesting story?

This is my new goal. To let the situation escalate and unfold. I don’t have enough crazy stories to tell, because I never push. Time to start mixing it up.
